Nainital Tourism - Located in the lap of Kumaon hills
of outer Himalayas, Nainital is a popular destination in Uttarakhand in India.
Nainital which is also known as Lake District of India is a paradise for nature
lovers named after the goddess Naina Devi and located around Naini Lake.
According to a recorded history in Manas khand
chapter of Skanda Purana, Nainital is referred to as the lake of three sages or
Tri Rishi Sarovar. The three sages,
Atri, Pulastya, and Pulaha stopped over here on their pilgrimage, to quench their thirst.
But they find no water there. It results in duging a hole and transferring some
water into it from the sacred lake of Tibet, Mansarovar. This way the famous
lake of Nainital came into existence.
Tourist Attractions in Nainital
Naini Lake - The most famous lake in Nainital is
Naini Lake. This eye shaped lake is a famous hot spot among tourists, enriched
with many small cottages, shops, restaurants and hotels. Boat rides can be
enjoyed over here with the surrounding beauty.
North end of the lake is known as Mallital while south end is known as
Tallital. The bridge that connects both the ends has quite few shops and a post
office which is the only one in the world located over a bridge.
Bhimtal Lake - It is located around 22 km. from Nainital
in pristine valley. This lake is named after Bhima, one of five pandavas in
Mahabharata. This lake contains an island in the center surrounded by crystal
blue water which can be reached only by boat.
Snow View Point, Sher-Ka Danda Ridge - This is the
coldest region in Nainital. Located at the altitude of 2270 m. it offers a
spectacular view of Naina Devi Peak. It can be visited by the Aerial Express
Ropeway. Here, breathtaking pictures of snow covered mountains can be captured.
Nakuchia Lake - Located four km. from Bhimtal is
Nakuchia lake which consists of nine corners. The lake is full of lotus flowers and surrounded by
beautiful oak forest.
St. John’s Church - This church was named and founded
by Daniel Wilson, The Bishop of Calcutta in 1844. This church is located on
Mallital, the north end of Nainital.
Guano Hills - It is located in Pangot village of
Nainital and is excellent for walk through oak, bamboo and deodar forests. You
can also spot some rare species of birds here such as grey woodpeckers, and
black chinned babbler.
Naina Devi Temple - Build in 15th century,
this temple is located on the northern shore of Naini Lake. This temple is
regularly visited by local devotees during religious festivals.
